Nation expects more even after impeachment of President

BY IFTIKHAR MASHWANI

Address other crucial issues also the ruling coalition partners in their own wisdom are bent upon impeaching the President and they may be having a rationale that this action will shut the doors for dictatorship once for all and allow the democracy to take its roots.

There are no two opinions that there is no system of Government better than democracy as it provides an opportunity to the masses to elect their representatives who are answerable to them and if they fail to come up to their expectations, they are rejected by the same people in the next elections. This is exactly what happened in the Feb.18 elections.

Both the PPP co-chaiperson Asif Zardari and the PML-N Quaid Mian Mohammad Nawaz have been reiterating day in and day out that they have the mandate to eliminate dictatorship and close the doors for the return of dictatorship for ever. No one disagrees that the elected leadership is within its legitimate right to proceed ahead what it thinks is better for the country and its people.

Yet, at the same time more crucial challenges are also facing the nation which deserve immediate attention of the government side by side the political issues. One shudders to imagine the consequences of the deteriorating law and order situation particularly in the NWFP and Balochistan which the two Provincial Governments seem to be helpless and clue less to deal with. Economy is nose diving, rupee has depreciated against the dollar by about 25%, foreign investors faith for investment in Pakistan is diminishing, energy crisis continues and inflation has gone out of control. There is usual rhetoric on the part of the government that their predecessors were responsible for all the ills and left the mess deliberately to discredit the elected Government.

Without going into merits or demerits of this criticism, it is the basic duty of the sitting Government to correct the wrongs done in the past as it is now answerable to the people. Therefore , we appeal to the Coalition
leadership that while it may go ahead with its political agenda but at the same time, for God sake, pay due attention to other crucial issues like price hike, law and order, unemployment and basic health and education issues which they deserve as the country is being de-stabilized in all respects.

Instead of indulging in blame game, the nation expects the elected leadership to steer the country out of the worst crisis in its history. All other issues are secondary. The foremost need of the hour is to provide basic necessities of life to the people. Failure to do so will spell disaster.
